Cyclamen Society Field Study: Georgia 2015

In 2014 the Society’s Research Sub-Committee decided to carry out a taxonomic
study of the Cyclamen coum group of species. Some botanists – principally
Russian – consider there to be a number of separate species (C. abchasicum
(Medw. Ex Kusn.) Kolak, C. adzharicum Pobed., C. circassicum Pobed.,
C. coum Mill., C. kusnetzovii Kotov & Cernova, C. vernum Sweet)
and the proposition is that the Society will use a combination of
morphological observations taken during field studies and DNA
analysis of leaf samples in the laboratory to determine ‘once
and for all!’ whether there is a single variable species or some
sort of a division is necessary.

16 plants were collected from 14 of the 23 sites surveyed.

A report of the 2015 field study was published in the
Cyclamen Society Journal Vol. 40 No. 1, June 2016.

Abridged field notes referenced by site number follow this table.

Acknowledments. This trip could not have been successful without the support we received in the Republic of Georgia, and we would like especially to thank our friend Manana Khutsishvili, Head of the Herbarium at the Ilia State University Institute of Botany; our guide Nina from the Batumi Botanic Garden (their help with plant identification was invaluable) and our driver Temuri Siukaev (very knowledgeable and a lovely guy to travel with). We are also very grateful to Teona Karchava of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Georgia for granting us permission to collect and export plant material, and Clare Trivedi of the Millenium Seedbank Partnership, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (Wakehurst Place) for allowing us to use their 4WD vehicle.
